Medical Aid for Palestine: Mr Graeme Groom CMG MA FRCS

Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon
IDEALS Co-Chair & Islamic Help Surgeons in Gaza

Mr Graeme Groom CMG MA FRCS is one of the UK’s most respected trauma and limb reconstruction surgeons and a senior figure in the long-term humanitarian surgical programme supporting Gaza. As a consultant at King’s College Hospital in London and co-chair of the medical charity IDEALS, he has led and delivered some of the most sustained and impactful surgical missions into Gaza for more than 15 years.

His work is central to Islamic Help’s ongoing medical deployments, bringing specialist care to patients who would otherwise have no access to the complex operations they urgently need.

A Leading Trauma & Limb Reconstruction Specialist

Mr Groom is a pioneer of limb reconstruction at King’s College Hospital, where he helped establish one of the UK’s foremost services for treating complex injuries, bone loss, infected fractures, and reconstructive trauma. His career blends NHS excellence with extensive field experience in disaster and conflict settings. This combination has earned him international recognition and the CMG honour for services to emergency aid and orthopaedics.

Entering medicine later in life, and trained with the support of the British Army, he developed a calm, systematic and highly skilled approach to managing severe injuries. This depth of expertise is what makes his work in Gaza so vital.

More Than 40 Humanitarian Missions to Gaza

Since 2009, Mr Groom has personally travelled to Gaza between 40 and 50 times, providing care through wars, ceasefires and prolonged siege conditions. His deployments focus on treating adults and children with injuries such as:

  • Blast trauma
  • Gunshot wounds
  • Burns
  • Severe fractures
  • Limb-threatening infections

These are cases where expert reconstructive surgery can mean the difference between keeping or losing a limb, and often, the difference between living with dignity or lifelong disability.

For many families, Mr Groom’s arrival represents hope: the possibility that their loved one may walk again, recover function, or avoid the long-term consequences of untreated injuries.

Building Gaza’s Long-Term Surgical Capacity

Alongside emergency operations, Graeme plays a central role in strengthening Gaza’s local healthcare system. Through IDEALS, he leads a comprehensive programme to train Palestinian surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists both in Gaza and through fellowships in the UK.

This long-term investment ensures that every deployment leaves behind greater capacity, improved trauma management, and stronger hospital services, a key factor in building trust and ensuring donors see real, lasting impact.

A Trusted Partner of Islamic Help

Islamic Help works closely with IDEALS to deliver surgical missions that meet the highest humanitarian and medical standards. Mr Groom is one of the senior clinicians guiding this collaborative model. His leadership ensures:

  • Strong coordination with Gaza’s hospitals.
  • Clear assessment of needs on the ground.
  • Transparent reporting for donors.
  • Safe and effective deployment of specialist surgical teams.

His presence on the front lines, speaking directly from Gaza’s hospitals, sharing updates, and showing donors what is happening in real time, has become a cornerstone of the trust Islamic Help has built with its supporters.

Recognised Internationally

Mr Groom was awarded the title of Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for his contributions to international emergency medical aid and orthopaedics. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association, one of the highest honours in his field.

These recognitions reflect not only his surgical skill but also his dedication to humanitarian ethics, patient dignity and long-term recovery for those affected by conflict.

Dedicated to Saving Lives in the Most Difficult Conditions

Whether operating in the UK or inside a Gaza hospital during a crisis, Graeme Groom brings the same commitment to every patient: to provide the highest standard of care with compassion, respect and humility.

Through Islamic Help’s partnership with IDEALS, and supported by generous donors, his work continues to restore hope and rebuild lives in one of the most challenging humanitarian environments in the world.
